About this Site
The site was originally created as a project to learn html/javascript. Most of the code
was hand written. Later the site was modified and JAlbum was used to generate the html
pages for the thumbnails and image viewing. Adobe PhotoShop was used to optimise the photographs,
which were scanned using a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II scanner. I am mainly digital now, but still
occasionally shot with film.
The site is best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768.
The site contains pictures that I have taken, as I visit / hill walk in Scotland. The Links page
contains links to some useful sites I have used in my travels.
A selection of images are available for purchase.
Born in 1966 in Glasgow and now living in Perth, I work as a Senior UNIX Systems Administrator for a local employer.
Before becoming a UNIX Systems Administrator, I worked as a Software Engineer.
It was through work that I got introduced to hill walking, as several of my colleagues
are also keen hill walkers.
I have been interested in photography from any early age, being introduced to it by my father,
but it wasn't until I started hill walking that I really got into landscape photography.
I hope you enjoy looking at these pictures, and maybe they will encourage you to visit the
locations where they were taken. If you can suggest any places to visit, then I would be happy to hear from you.
My main cameras since 1984, were a Minolta X-700 and a Minolta XD-7 with
17mm and 20mm Ultra-Wide Angle, 24-35mm, 35-135mm and 100-300mm zoom lenses.
All lenses are genuine Minolta lenses. Polarising, graduated grey
and neutral density filters are used as required. A Minolta SRT 303b was occasionally
used.
The manual focus kit went into semi-retirement when I purchased 2 Minolta 800Si bodies in 2005. They were used
with a Tamron 19-35mm and Minolta 28-105mm and 75-300mm lenses.
Most shots were taken on Fuji Sensia II 100 ASA film. Agfa CTX100 and Kodachrome 64 was also used
in the past.
In 2007, I moved onto digital, buying a Minolta 7D as I could use the lenses for the the 800Si's.
I also purchased a Sigma 400mm lens, and on the 7D with it's 1.5x cropping factor it was ideal for
bird photography. The 1.5x cropping factor was a bit of a problem with the landscape photography,
so for really wide angle shots, I still continued to use the 800Si's. I also started stitching the images
from the 7D to make the panoramas. This opened up a whole new avenue to me. I have also experimented
with HDR photography.
In 2009, I sold off all the auto-focus Minolta kit and purchased a Canon 1D Mk II. With it's 1.3x cropping
factor, this was a good compromise for landscape work and is still better than 35mm for the bird photography.
I use 20-35mm, 28-135mm and 100-300mm Canon lenses. I also use a Sigma 170-500mm lens for the bird photography.
I am currently on the look out for a Canon EOS-1n film camera as a backup camera to 1D.
